Sorry I am late this week! As promised last week I wanted to talk about kokedama. This is my staghorn fern kokedama. ‘Patycerium’ or staghorn ferns are epiphytic, which just means they grow in trees. They are a tropical plant that likes high humidity. This makes them a great choice for kokedama! This is a traditional Japanese method of planting in a moss ball. It is definitely a little more tricky to look after. I wild foraged the sheet moss off a rock in our forest. You only need a little bit if you want to try this. There are some great YouTube videos on how to make a kokedama, so give it a google! As far as care, It would love a north facing window, but it is fairly flexible. To water - once it has dried out sufficiently - you are looking for that goldilocks zone of dry enough, but not parched! Then place the moss ball in a bowl and add water. I let it soak up what it wants for a short time maybe 10 minutes. You don’t want it sodden! How often you need to water really depends on your house environment and the time of year. Between watering a regular misting of the fern and moss. Mine lives in our master bathroom and seams pretty happy there on its north window!
